I will always do my very best to answer the calls of everyone else no matter who they are. Even if one day, I may end up getting strangled by it all.
— Honami Ichinose's monologue, Volume 6, "Honami Ichinose's Everyday 2" short story

Honami Ichinose ( (いち) () () () (なみ) , Ichinose Honami) is one of the female heroines who frequently appears in the You-Zitsu series as a rival leader to the other classes competing for the position of Class A. She also happens to be an affiliated member of the Student Council led by its president Miyabi Nagumo. So far, she is currently considered a second-year student of Advanced Nurturing High School. At the beginning of the series, Honami was introduced as both the first-year's class representative and a freshman student who originally hailed from Class 1-B.

Appearance

Honami is described to be a young teenage girl, who is esteemed to be one of the most alluring and attractive students in high school by her peers and seniors. She is even called beautiful by Kiyotaka Ayanokōji with back-length strawberry-blonde hair and blue eyes. According to Kiyotaka, in the cruise ship, he couldn't look away from Honami's entrancing blue eyes that threatened to always draw him into it when gazing directly his way. Particularly, Honami was described in the books to have long, light pinkish-type hair which travels down in length to her waist or hip. Besides having an average height, she possesses an extremely well-endowed figure that is a source of jealousy for Suzune Horikita. Honami notes that she has experienced considerable growth spurt with her body's bust, continuing to grow a bit bigger over time ever since during her days in the third year of junior high/middle school.

She happened to be often seen wearing the school's standard uniform with a buttoned crimson blazer which is also connected to and covering most of her white blouse. Within the centre of her formal attire, she sometimes uses either a dark red or blue ribbon tie. In addition to that, Honami has on a short-length white sailor striped pleated skirt that all girls from her high school typically wear. More so, she put on black mid-calf socks that are below the skirt. There are different variations in the light novel illustrations of what she wears to school, indicating that she regularly switches between using brown or black shoes before heading to class in the early mornings. Her clothing of choice sometimes varies depending on the context of where she is at, such as when outside of school time or on vacation, Honami was known to be dressed in many casual garments. For instance, at the swimming pool, she once wore a bikini with her top tied in a ribbon knot. During the survival test, she had put on a red tracksuit with a white shirt underneath it.

According to Kiyotaka himself, Honami had the necessary qualities including her own face and figure that a gravure idol was ideally thought to have, similar to Airi who is already in such a position to be infamous across the web and in young men's magazines.

Personality

Episode 003-02

Honami's kindness shown.

If there was one sentence to describe Honami, it would be that she is genuinely kind-hearted, benevolent, and a pacifist to the core who is against the use of underhanded means and violence. She is extremely engaging and interactive during social interactions with her peers, willing to befriend all sorts of people in and out of her classroom with open arms be it a teacher or student, easily pulling everyone's focus solely on her. One of her main traits is her selfless and supportive personality, combined with her excellent social skills and being naturally people-oriented. Honami is also a charismatic, energetic person with no ulterior motives, and extends her sweet and benign character even to those of the lower classes and levels, unlike many other upper-class students. In the first-year story, this was seen when she went to great length in trying to stop a possible brawl between three Class 1-C students and one of Class 1-D from breaking out, having a sharp-tongue to criticize others for trying to incite violence, especially in the library. Without directly bad mouthing or mocking the offenders disrespectfully, the most she did was being judgmental and prudent in pointing out their rude behavior in a public space, reminding them to be civil and tactful and respect the tranquility of where they were at. For this reason, she can also be seen as being a strict, upright individual who follows the code of conduct, acting according to whichever kind of environment she is in such as the library area, a quiet place that was supposed to be for reading and studying.[1] She has a problem-solver type of mentality, ready to take on challenges with her wits, remaining calm-minded and clear-headed even when one section in her group was acting uncooperative with the other members. Kiyotaka notes that she isn't the kind of person who would speak ill of others without any sort of reason to do so. Additionally, her good-natured disposition is also what allowed her to become close friends with the likes of Kikyō Kushida and Kiyotaka Ayanokōji, despite them both being students of Class 1-D which was looked down on by upper classes and were deemed as defective existences.

Even though she politely rejected the romantic feelings of an admirer who was considered to be a close friend of hers, Honami refrained from using any harsh or hurtful words and still honestly hoped to stay as friends with her classmate afterwards. She acts friendly to most of the students whether they're in the same class as her or not without showing bias from her tone of words when conversing with them. As she is popular among the boys and girls from all classes and grade levels, she is a person who has a way with words, pulling and tugging the heartstrings of many like Kiyotaka to feel affection towards her without intending to do so. She is a lively girl who appears to be brightly talkative with friends and adversaries no matter their affiliation or background.[2] Even when the going gets tough, she stays sangfroid and aplomb as long as victory is still within her class's reach. In the light novels, during a girls' talk even with her new friends she made along the way while faced with an exam, Honami could be genuinely viewed by others as an honest, truthful person to a fault without attempting to lie her way out or feign ignorance when being barraged with questions.[3] Honami was eager to actively collaborate with the students of the other classes and reach out to them during the exam where they were put together in the same group, looking to earn their trust and friendship. She even readily came prepared ahead of time to play cards with them. Honami is a curious individual who can come off as appearing interested to whoever caught her attention like Kiyotaka, believing there is still plenty more to find out about the true extent of his abilities. This curiosity of hers motivates her enough to go as far as to seek out Kiyotaka and attempt to engage in a conversation with him about his past life, wishing to investigate the latter and getting to know the man better as a fellow student. Suffice to say, she is the lynchpin holding her class together and stalwart towards her classmates, attracting even the attention and praise from other class leaders like Arisu, Ryuuen, Kiyotaka and Nagumo.

What's more, she is described to be a person of principle and conviction who has her own moral values to stand by and follow accordingly as it is a matter of virtue to her. Honami is resolute and steadfast in keeping her word, as after Kiyotaka helped her, she acknowledged that she owed him a favour for his help. She dislikes the mere thought of going up against people from opposing classes who she has a deep liking to during a competition as it feels like she betrayed them, particularly Kiyotaka. Before Suzune shot down her appeal, she would try her utmost best to no avail in extending the duration of the class alliance with Kiyotaka's class for as long as possible until the former herself is mentally prepared to see her former ally as an enemy to do battle against. While offering him support, she reminded him how this debt was something the former ought to seriously pay back as thanks. When she fell in love with somebody for the first time in her life and sought to buy that person a gift, Honami would be in self-denial about her feelings for the latter, telling herself that the gift was her way of conveying gratitude and debt to her saviour contrary to what the expression shown on her face is indicating to others.[4] She continued to assist and cooperate with him by gathering evidence to prove Ken Sudō's innocence. Honami even assisted Kiyotaka in rescuing Airi Sakura though she was under no obligation to do so, showing her generosity. This generous nature can be seen further when she was willing to use up some of her own private points to aid in carrying out Class D's strategy secretly made by Kiyotaka in Suzune's name against Kakeru's class to corner Ken's provocateurs. When her classmates had to partner up with an enemy class, she appeared vocal and unyielding about getting everyone to cooperate in overcoming the exam without any intention of giving up until it ended. Additionally, this can be attributed to her outspoken nature of calling others out like Kakeru in the presence of many students for not willing to work with her classmates during an exam where the two classes have to cooperate. She admits to herself that if Kiyotaka had been in her class, she wouldn't have had to worry about going all out or holding back and knew he would be an indispensable ally. She laments at the fact that this illusion wasn’t the reality she was living in.

More so, Honami is rather humble and modest to anyone be it her enemy or ally as in spite of her great talents and popular beauty known across school, she is not at all boastful about them but remains levelheaded and speaks respectfully to all her peers, even those in the lower classes. As a class leader who stands up and speaks on behalf of her whole class, that aspect of Honami is what attributes her to being a rational individual who can be reasoned with logically. She shows signs of being compassionate, caring and worrisome in nature about people even outside her class, apart from her classmates, voicing her meaningless worries for the others' well-being if they were in a dangerous situation.[5] Nonetheless, she prioritises the safety of her classmates first above all others, which matters to her the most in protecting,[6] with a rare exception if it involves the chances of Kiyotaka being expelled in later volumes. On the other hand, she also has a trusting side, considering the fact that she went as far as asking Kiyotaka, who she had just recently met, if he would pretend to be her boyfriend as a way to help her solve the relationship issue she had with her friend. This trust she has with anyone, like Kiyotaka regardless of their class affiliation, was seen again when she allowed him to borrow the use of her phone when he asked for it. She wouldn't go so far to persistently keep on questioning their action, particularly what Kiyotaka is doing in the Event Selection Exam as long as it proves reasonable and explainable to her which the former won't pursue further. However, Honami's trusting personality towards both Arisu and Miyabi can end up putting her in a terrible predicament and state of mind once they betrayed her that wasn't easy for her to recover or overcome without Kiyotaka intervening. Her most powerful idiosyncratic quirk can also be her most damaging blemish, as it has been used against her time and time again, to which she had to be repeatedly saved by Kiyotaka.

Meanwhile in the anime, Honami comes off as a bit playful in nature, teasing others to her own amusement as shown when she teasingly mentions Airi's close relationship and her obvious romantic affections for Kiyotaka. Though it was shown to be all in good fun between the two girls, as after her own friendly relationship with Kiyotaka was mentioned by Kikyō, Honami simply gave a slight smile in response about the growing friendship she had made with him after the two met and befriended each other. Honami rarely gets annoyed, although when the situation calls for it, she adopts a serious side to herself which was shown when she reprimanded Kakeru Ryūen and students of Class 1-C for their bullying of Ken and they complied without protest. This side of her was seen again when she helped Kiyotaka apprehend a man who was attempting to assault Airi and told the man to be silent after he protested and gave him a look of disgust for his actions. During the Sports Festival, she is open and helpful to working with unreasonable people like Kakeru if they happen to pair up together, putting aside her feelings for now to achieve victory on an exam for the sake of her class.[7] Honami is strong-willed enough to step in front of two powerful male students fearlessly without batting an eye, ready to make verbal threats like warning the school about them if they don't stop escalating the dispute. Honami dislikes allowing trouble to go unnoticed in front of her, making Honami seem like an interventionist in nature. This was due to the frequent times where Honami often found herself sticking her nose in other people's business which was not her place to get involved until it detrimentally affected her and her class during an exam.

Usually, Honami is the type who goes with the flow or the mood whenever she talks with her friends.[8] Yet, for situations that involve herself lacking in knowledge about topics that revolved around romance, confessions, and so on, Honami is seemingly oblivious on what to do next and how to answer it while in front of her friends. Let alone that, Honami becomes somewhat shy and needy for advice as she goes out of her way to ask for Kiyotaka's assistance involving a friend's confession to her. After getting a love letter from her friend Chihiro Shiranami, she is unsure on how to go about it, thinking of not being honest about her true feelings towards the girl and to lie and pretend that she is with Kiyotaka as his fake girlfriend as the best way to get out of such situation. Honami even admitted to Kiyotaka that she had no idea of what it meant to be a couple with someone or how to turn a person down without hurting them and her friendship.[9] When taking into consideration Miyabi's deal of borrowing points by going out with him, it is revealed that Honami had no experience on love or any romantic relations whatsoever with the opposite gender before and does not know how to confront them properly until she later confesses to Kiyotaka during their second year in school. Her shyness was seen again when Honami hesitated in talking about the growth of her bust size to Suzune Horikita after she asked about her chest development. On the other hand, Honami seems rather secretive about herself and her class, as she was quick to take action in reclaiming her phone back without haste when Kiyotaka noticed the massive number of private points she possessed.

In that sense, she is protective of the class dealings between herself and her fellow classmates as these details are promisingly kept confidential among them. This was seen again as only in the anime that before Honami spoke to Ryūji Kanzaki about twenty million private points, she would make sure to hide her phone from him though she was very vague in her query. Due to this, she appears to understand why others hide their own secrets as shown where she recognized the true intelligence of Kiyotaka and saw that he was someone who shouldn't belong in Class D. Even so, Honami expressed enough consideration for his privacy that she didn't push the issue any further when he didn't seem to like talking about it. That being said, she still maintained a sense of curiosity about him, as seen in a conversation with her homeroom teacher on the cruise. Honami doesn't appreciate receiving praise from others like Kiyotaka and Suzune if it doesn't feel warranted or justified due to her own past mistakes. Honami happens not to think very highly of herself such as when being called a good person, thinking that she is not a wonderful human being as Suzune makes her out to be. It was to the point where Honami uncomfortably refuses to look at Suzune in the face anymore in a conversation after getting called that, choosing to avoid locking direct eye contact with her altogether as she doesn't want to be given too much credit by the latter as a goody two shoes.[10] Prior to her romantic feelings for Kiyotaka taking root, she was presumably thought to be overly idealistic and hopeful in achieving a future where all her classmates are saved, won't drop out of school and graduating with them from Class A as a whole, not looking to lose any one of them due to expulsion. As she set her mind and goal on rising to Class A and graduating together with every single one of her precious classmates intact, Kiyotaka advises Honami to continue placing her trust on her class and move forward with her classmates without looking back no matter what happens.

In the light novels, she also maintains a playful side, enjoying the experience of teasing Kiyotaka and flirting with him but it's all done in fun with the bantering as well since they are close associates.[11] She even went to him for aid, after her past of shoplifting was revealed to the school. Though it may seem natural to her, she was said to be frankly straightforward and direct with her words. Since she sincerely possesses a saint-like attitude, Honami was described by Arisu to be a prim and proper person who is filled to the brim with virtue without any traces of falsehood or lies behind showing such outward demeanor. While she is outgoing and open to helping her classmates, she is hesitant in reaching out for their support when dealing with her own problems. She is afraid of troubling and worrying them.[12] Despite the level of secrecy she hides about her past from her friends, she still ended up telling it to her enemy anyway, even if she was manipulated to. Not willing to have her classmates make sacrifices except for herself, she is a selfless, altruistic person who looks to take on all their problems even if it means putting herself at risk of expulsion. This self-sacrificing nature of Honami for her classmates comes into conflict with her increasing selfishness of wanting to save a special someone outside her classroom later down the line too.

In a predicament that seems tough to overturn without making a hard choice due to the belief she had for the class as a leader, Honami can come off as both indecisive and weak where it matters most like achieving victory for the benefit of her classmates. Although she is thoughtful in her mind, Honami's thoughts are all over the place when things don't go exactly according to her battle strategy, not anticipating unexpected things to turn up suddenly out of the blue. When Honami last faced off against Kakeru and his class, she becomes utterly stupefied, lost, and incompetent by how to respond to the man's shady tactics, unable to hastily make a comeback or change the situation around until it was too late to do so before losing. Reasonably so, in that type of competition during an exam where she is on the losing end of the spectrum, Honami is left almost somewhat speechless and quiet on what to do or say next but mutter a few words before resuming her silence. Normally, in times of defeat, Honami would do her best to continue acting positively cheerful and enthusiastic in the presence of her classmates, suggesting to them that they host a celebration event together with them after an exam despite not achieving victory. She makes sure everybody including herself is not feeling negative about their class's loss, acting down-to-earth and positive enough that their spirits are lifted.[13] Being who she is, Honami's gullibility had been exploited against the former by her friends and foes alike time and time again. To everyone, especially by her classmates, she can be seen as easily gullible enough to hear out whatever people like Kiyotaka, Arisu or Manabi asked of her, deciding to accept a request for a private talk by someone from a different class without showing a sense of wariness.

However, after having suffered consecutive losses at the hands of both Arisu and Kakeru, Kiyotaka states that Honami has lost a lot of confidence in herself as the leader of her class. Throughout her first year in school, Honami was not able to see tremendous growth in the past year with herself unlike with the other class leaders such as Suzune who did as they are becoming stronger than they were before. As she felt like she was losing herself and her self-confidence, Honami also had the impression that the others were leaving her in the dust. Due to that realisation, she feels extremely uneasy and fearful about whatever unknown future that awaited herself and her whole class. Her classmate Ryūji even said that Honami is the type who dislikes getting into extreme conflicts to begin with. He was certain enough that Honami has a big enough heart and is magnanimous to even forgive the people who defame her. Rather than have any sort of hatred towards her enemy like Arisu and Kakeru for humiliating her, Honami never once shows any signs of harbouring grudges about their wrongdoings but let the past be bygones. If anything, the most Honami could do was discreetly express her own wariness and distrust of the two class leaders' suspicious actions and motives. From Kiyotaka's point of view and by her classmates' outlook, Honami tends to be seen as quite reflective on sorting out her own feelings and will keep herself shut in her own room to reflect on them frequently without seeking dialogue from her classmates even when suggested by the latter to reach out to them whenever she needs help. In the case of when she had to ascertain whether a student pose a threat or not, Honami carefully reflects and analyse on what she knows about the person at least in terms of what their outward personality and abilities shows, harbouring doubts if all the achievements made by a class stemmed from their leader and not someone else who may be surreptitiously working behind the scenes.[14]

According to her upperclassman Miyabi Nagumo from a higher grade, she is described to be a diligent, earnest hard worker who is strongly dedicated in carrying out many tasks and duties as a member of the Student Council alongside him, since they began working together for the past year. Honami is ardently proactive in that sense, pushing herself to work behind the scenes not only for supporting her entire class but for the sake of the Student Council as well for a year. As goal-driven as she was, Honami admits that she sees herself as ambitious and committed to both her class and the Student Council, aspiring and striving to become as successful as Miyabi who was able to successfully help his Class B rise up to Class A. She is public-spirited enough to act as a beacon of light and hope for the new first-year students with poor academic skills, going so far and wide as to have herself and her classmates tutor plus form a partnership contract with them during an exam where expulsion can occur. In addition to that, she appears remarkably tolerant of people's bad remarks and manners towards her without feeling offended by whatever they said if it happened to be baseless rumours that are false about her. While she cares less about the negativity or lies people give her, Honami who is headstrong felt more than ready to confront it confidently with the truths and facts as evidence to support her claims. Based on the monologue in light novel volume 9 from her time as a first-year, Honami deems herself as a person that has to place her faith on others in contrast to having been the one who doesn't believe she should be trusted due to losing that trust with her family members. She is not completely mentally resilient around rumours of her past experience as when word got out that she is a criminal, Honami loses her calm composure and experiences a severe mental breakdown. This in turn led to her self-isolation at home, where she reverted to her shut-in persona, refusing to neither attend class nor hang out with her friends anymore until Kiyotaka came along and changed that. Prior to that happening though, during a period of self-alienation, what Honami felt back then was her own timidness, insecurity and weak-mindedness not to ask for help, confront her friends or seek comfort from them emotionally about her past.

If either faced with a dilemma that relates to Kiyotaka or the latter who chooses to involve himself with her, Honami is fervently tearful and emotional on what to say to him, her words either faltering or stuttering in every situation. During the second-year story, Arisu Sakayanagi calls Honami out as being irrational with her persistent optimism for believing that the power of their class's friendship and unity will one day lead them to Class A and overcome their rivals. In addition, she was told by Arisu that she was delusional with her ideology, as someone who felt unable to face the cruel reality of her own class situation and accept the truth that was arguably backed with factual points provided as evidence, continuing to stand strong, resilient and argumentative despite being pushed back several times. This also coincides with Honami's temperament of not strongly accepting the unequal, small difference with her class's growth including herself within a year to the other leaders and their respective class who had a number of stronger character developments overall. Furthermore, ever since she began subconsciously developing romantic feelings towards Kiyotaka without recognising or understanding what they are for him,[15] some students from Honami's class finally began to see a slow but noticeable change in her attitude and behaviour over the course of time. This was shown to be the case when three of her classmates such as Kozue, Sayo, and Tetsuya are aware of her apparent love for him. Before long, the rest of her classmates managed to catch on and became fully aware of her crush on Kiyotaka. The three even told Kiyotaka that his name was often brought up by Honami on multiple occasions. She seems to be incapable of silently hiding her feelings about Kiyotaka to her friends, lacking the self-control to keep her mouth shut or her thoughts to herself concerning him. Honami's deep-seated thoughts for him often had recently begun to cloud her own judgement and decision-making ability as a class leader, to the point where she becomes emotionally driven and impulsive in the romantic sense. Once she lets those feelings take precedence without control, it psychologically dictated and spurred Honami to take action out of worry for him even when the latter advised her not to while believing he is an enemy to her class.

Meanwhile, she wants to be seen by others including her crush as a strong individual who is not only a capable class leader but decisive as well without hinting at any signs of weaknesses at one point in time. On the one hand, Honami appears to grow more mindfully conscious about taking care of her personal appearance to some extent. She would go so far as to make herself look and smell charmingly good in the eyes of her beholder like Kiyotaka with citrus perfume, using it as her body's fragrance. This is apparently the case when she went all out to raise her own sex appeal by a little bit, covering herself in that special kind of aroma as a mean to attract his attention and arouse his interest in her. If Honami had an unexpected encounter with Kiyotaka unprepared that she was not ready for, she can become somewhat softly regretful, apprehensive, and shy on herself for forgetting something important as that when around his presence. At other times with Kiyotaka though when no conflicts are in her way, she can appear laid-back and easygoing, adventurously looking to admire the beauty of nature with him.[16] When she failed to show and upheld that strong, positive image of hers, Honami felt greatly disappointed at herself that she began to develop some doubts about her capabilities as a leader. Not just this, but Honami also felt deeply self-responsible and guilty of her own bad decisions she poorly made for her class, choosing to lay and shoulder all the blame and failures solely on only herself rather than shared it with her classmates. After she and her classmates dropped down from Class 2-B to Class 2-C, anxiety began to develop and take root in her subconscious.[17] It is to the extent where she fell into the state of depression and was not willing to return to her room because the mere thought of doing so depressed her as her mind wandered and started self-deprecating her negligence.

From Kakeru Ryūen's description about her, he remarks how Honami was exactly the kind of person who would't mind the thought of risking her own life tooth and nail to prevent her classmates from getting expelled no matter what. Even if it means she broke out in a fever or end up getting herself injured during the process, he believes Honami will still somehow come crawling on her hands and knees anyway to go and save them while wounded. If not for Kiyotaka saving her in several dilemmas and the promise they made to one another to see each other again by the end of her second-year, Honami wouldn't have the strength or willpower left to be able to carry on fighting for the objective of her class. Honami's naive mindset of thinking she can save everyone by sacrificing herself was the most detrimental flaw to her class, and could have very well ended them if Kiyotaka had not intervened on her behalf. Whenever her mind is in total disarray, Honami will sometimes find herself stumbled upon dangerous situations like standing in the rainy weather that she has no intention in getting out of, remaining unprotected without an umbrella and figuring that the former deserves to have a cold fever. That was only until Kiyotaka decides to put himself in the same situation as her for Honami to witness that she reconsider her action of self-harm. After having been saved by him multiple times and getting to understand him a little better in private, this causes her to start thinking highly of Kiyotaka, to the point where she is trusting and depending on him more than any if not all her closest friends altogether. Even entrusting Kiyotaka with the role of being her confidante and as a middleman when negotiating with Kakeru's students like Mio Ibuki. Feeling indebted to Kiyotaka and knowing how helpful he is in leading a hand to someone as she, Honami attempts to ingratiate herself with him, always wanting to earn praise for him by presenting the latter with her best self but seemingly only ever shows the former her vulnerable side. Although this made Honami feel pathetic for allowing him to see her in such a sorry state, Honami felt glad when he told her she could seek him whenever she wanted, sparing no expense to help her. Ever since then, she became open to conveying her troubles and concerns to Kiyotaka as both an individual and class leader respectively.

When caught in an unexpected life-or-death situation beyond her control, Honami would feel frightened for her own life, running recklessly without paying careful attention to her footing and the terrains she was in to escape Tsukishiro and Katsunori Shiba. As she is scared stiff at the time after overhearing the grown-ups' secret conversation that wasn't supposed to be heard by the former, Honami started having more concerning thoughts for not only her and her classmates' safety but also Kiyotaka's fate in the Uninhabited Island Exam as well. In Honami's head, her mind was said to have been filled with unrest and unease, unable to retain her focus and concentration in fulfilling designated areas and tasks until she tells Kiyotaka about what will happen to him on the final day of the exam. Although Kiyotaka told her that she mustn't show deep concern about whatever happen to the other students, particularly himself who hailed from a different class outside her own, Honami was against the idea of keeping her caring demeanour reserved for only her classmates as she still doesn't shy away from taking action to warn him. Deliberating between who to prioritise on saving first, she becomes distressed and confused in her mind, experiencing inner conflicts with herself internally and feeling out of character outwardly as even Arisu ponders about her strange movement during the exam while they're in the same group together. By the time when she alerted Kiyotaka about Acting Director Tsukishiro's plan for his expulsion, Honami finally acknowledge and understood that she does have a crush on him romantically, no longer afraid to hide the fact anymore by saying the words "I like you" to him twice anticipating the reply for her very first confession to another person. Honami who used to be selfless is showing signs of becoming selfish and careless to a fault, going so far as to put herself in danger physically and mentally without care to save someone important to her outside her class, taking risks that may have very well likely put the safety of her entire class in jeopardy for him. This is the moment when Honami's priority for her classmates above all else beginning to crumble from the inside due to her own thoughts and feelings for Kiyotaka getting in the way of all that as it conflicted with one another. Not just this, but the same could also be said with how her principles and just methods to approach exams and class competitions are showing cracks as she began to reflect on it and question if only she was like the other class leaders. Despite this, Kiyotaka encourages Honami to keep doing what she always does and maintain it for as long as possible until near the end of their second-year, indicates that he is there for her as her moral compass.[18]

Later on, during the school trip, Honami came to acknowledge the reality of her own class's predicament that her way of doing things is not working out well, as the goal of reaching Class A steadily becomes harder to obtain and ever so out of reach the longer she does nothing to turn it around in their favor. Furthermore, Honami even went as far as admitting to Kiyotaka how she wants to attain something that she don't have as of yet even if that means changing who she is as a individual in order to secure a win, yearning to break the deadlock in the class competition and close the point gap with her rival classes. She was frustrated with herself, feeling guilty at her own lack of power to make a difference for the sake of her class. According to Kiyotaka, she's been growing weak at a rapid pace after her confession to him. He described Honami's fatal weakness lies solely in her heart being too weak and brittle to the point that she had considered leaving school and dropping out as the latter lost the reason to fight the good fight with her friends in aiming for Class A. This was the case when she instinctively decided to go missing alone at night, disappearing in the middle of a blizzard without caring to inform her friends beforehand of where she will be at and not returning to the inn until Kiyotaka finally found her. Initially, Honami felt broken and discouraged at first when she figured there was no hopes of getting what she wanted, but Kiyotaka told her to not fret about it when he volunteers to be there for her, comforting the former with a hug to take the next step forward. After the event from last night, she was able to make a speedy recovery while finding renewed resolve to make a newfound change in herself for the better.[19]

Ever since that fateful day during the school trip and also the second time spent with Kiyotaka in his bedroom thereafter, Honami was described to have been mentally fully recovered and feeling stable. This was apparently the case when Kiyotaka recognizes how acutely aware and mindful of where her classmates' concerns are directed at which is her, knowing full well of why they sought his help of all people in relation to her as he happened to be the closest person who she will shared her worries with. Honami had gone through an awakening of some sort based on an instinct she reached accordingly by and not through considering probability, the kind in which allowed her to greatly change the former's set of ethical principles and values in a way that would support her own happy desires as well. This means Honami morally keeping the kindness and goodness within her heart limited solely to Kiyotaka and her classmates alone while she treats everyone else outside her class as nothing more than enemies from now on to be dealt with no mercy whatsoever regardless of their reason. In other words, no longer choosing to direct her good-nature in all directions where it once included friends and foes alike, she will only act "good" to just him and any of her classmates she is close friends with while the "evil" malice shown outward by her will be completely directed to outsiders in order to protect those she hold dearly important. As Honami has grown merciless to anyone who isn't her classmate excluding Kiyotaka, she has developed the willingness to also finally considered using whatever means she had in her disposal to emerge victorious if they ever so happened to get in her way.

For instance, when Kakeru threatens to have one of her classmates go through expulsion, Honami warns that she will have no other choice but to expel him from school in response to his threat. Although she made it her lifelong objective for the rest of 2nd year and next year to continue striving for Class A with her classmates while staying in school, Honami also recently found herself with another goal to pursue and accomplish with her own hands. Having developed the selfish desire to chase happiness for herself, this new dream she had in mind is wanting to earn Kiyotaka's love someday over the course of time. Determined and motivated to do what she wants for it to be brought to fruition, she vows to become a special someone who Kiyotaka will definitely want to turn his attention to, like he did with Kei Karuizawa, making the latter deduced that Honami too have grown strongly dependent on him but in a different way from her. According to Kakeru, she was described to have develop an obsessive personality for Kiyotaka, appearing more bolder and honest about her own feelings towards him without bothering to hide it in front of her enemies like Arisu anymore. Nonetheless, Honami remains a fair-minded and just person to some degree when she still went of her way to insist both Kiyotaka and Kei that the couple need to make up, even going so far as volunteering herself to be the intermediary in fixing their broken relationship.[20]

Background

LN Vol 09-11

Younger Honami from the past.

Prior to the plot of her high school life, she had once happily lived a fun, comfortable lifestyle throughout both her elementary school and middle school years. She made plenty of friends, both boys and girls alike. Honami happens to hail from a fatherless family, living with her mom and her little sister who is two years younger than her. Honami's family isn't very well-off as her mother had it hard, working full-time as she alone raised two children all by herself without their father around to help. Ever since elementary school, Honami had made it her plan to get a job of her own after she finished middle school. Sincerely looking to increase her family's low-income and give them happiness, Honami thought that she could be of use to the two by seeking a job where she can work to earn money like her mother. Because it would cost a lot of money to get into high school, Honami's reason for searching for a job was so that she could help out not only herself but also her mother and sister financially as well. In the end, this idea she had in mind couldn't come to pass because her mother was opposed to it. Nonetheless, even without the money, Honami did in fact successfully put in a lot of effort and time to study and developed her skills as hard as possible. Although she found sports rather difficult, Honami does try to put in as much effort into it as she did with her studies. Thanks to that, she was able to make use of the student scholarship system and reach the top of her middle school. As an honors student and a member of the student council in middle school, she was offered a spot at a private high school on a scholarship. By the time she became a 3rd year in middle school, Honami was even able to gain the title of student council president that she had longed sought after.

During the summer of that year, she discovered her mother pushed herself too hard and collapsed while trying to support and raise their livelihood as a family. At some point in time later on, her mother would go through sudden hospitalization, leaving the former unable to buy her younger sister a birthday present. Seeing the anguish and ridicule her sister was showing to their mom for not getting her her first present, Honami figured the only way to restore her smile is that she the elder sister must be the one to do it in her mother's stead. So, after school on the day of her sister's birthday, Honami went to a department store and stole for the very first time a fashionable hair clip which was worth 10,000 yen without getting caught red-handed. Despite feeling guilty for having committed theft, she still went home and presented the hair clip to her sulking little sister which made the latter happy. Even though Honami had told her sister beforehand to keep the present a secret from their mom, she ended up wearing it anyway the next time they went to pay a visit to her in the hospital. Through that visit, her mother learned of the robbery she did in the store and became seriously angry with Honami to the point where she got slapped for it and took away the hair clip from her sister. Although her mother was supposed to stay hospitalized, Honami was forcibly dragged back to the store by the latter to return it. At the same time, Honami would prostrate on her hands and knees while begging for their forgiveness about the crime she had done to them. Whilst the store didn't hand her over to the police, the commotion about the theft she committed still did spread beyond her control. It is currently unclear as to what changes happened to Honami's relationship with her family members or about what it is like between them now that the incident has long been resolved. Without Kiyotaka's intervention, Honami would have never forgiven herself for what she had done or come to terms with it. Driven by her guilty conscience and laying the blame on herself, she wasted almost half of the 3rd-year of middle school and became a shut-in before graduation.

Meanwhile, she had never once bothered to consult with anyone about issues that became detrimental to her mental well-being. In other words, Honami being absent from school had badly affected her class attendance for as long as six months. When she learned about Advanced Nurturing High School, Honami thought that it was her chance to think about moving forward at long last and start over again with a blank slate. It was all because of her homeroom teacher from middle school informing her about this high school that she picked this institution to be enrolled in. Swearing an oath to herself, she decided to attend school once again in the hopes that she could bring back the smiles of her mother and her little sister. Though the shoplifting incident was resolved way back in middle school, it still affected her even when she went on to enter high school where this crime resurfaced as a rumor spread by Arisu. After entering high school upon enrollment, Honami had made it her objective of wanting to apply for the Student Council and work with them like back in her middle school days. In turn, she proceeded to go out of her way and submit an application to join the student body group led by the then President, Manabu Horikita during that time as a first-year freshman student. Not before long though, in the special one-on-one interview she had with Manabu, her application was soon turned down by him much to her disappointment. Following that event however, Honami was able to later successfully get on board with the Student Council thanks to the work of Vice-President, Miyabi who silently established contact with her behind President Manabu's back[21] right after she had chosen to reveal her mistake to him. The reason how someone like Miyabi was able to somehow convince Honami to give away her own secret to him in the open is through putting himself in her shoes where she must confess the full truth behind her assignment to Class B without holding anything back like he had once done in the past with an unknown Student Council member. Understanding what she must do in order to successfully apply for the Student Council, Honami was given the option by Miyabi of confessing her past to a powerful member of the student body so that he can then evaluate her worth as proof of having what it takes to be part of the organization.

Although she tries to inquire what Miyabi's confession was, he refuses to answer her as Honami is the one who is being questioned by him. After checking her achievements and abilities for himself during this meeting, Honami was told by him that it wouldn't have been strange if she had been placed in Class A instead of Class B during the start of her first-year as a freshman but figured something must be amiss of why that is not the case. He demands Honami to disclose everything about her history prior to enrolling in high school, egging the girl to explain the reason for what put her into Class B and not Class A. Miyabi states that if the former deemed Honami as a student worthy enough of Class A then he'll take responsibility and accept her into the Student Council as she wanted. Seeing that she still holds a slim chance of getting into the student body due to the possibility of hope that his words had given her, Honami reflects on the causes of why someone as her was not placed in Class A but Class B and whether to openly state the truth. Honami was informed by Miyabi that he is taking her application into consideration despite Manabu's refusal to let her enter the Student Council due to the Vice-President needing to find and recruit a first-year freshman like herself to join the group and be trained under him. As Vice-President Miyabi was set to be the future Student Council President after his predecessor Manabu steps down, it was why she got scouted out by him in the first place beforehand to first assess Honami's achievements and abilities before deciding to allow her entry as an official member of the student body. When Miyabi finally states that if she turns away this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show her worth, Honami won't be able to secure a special place in the Student Council anymore. Upon hearing what he said to be her one and only chance to redeem herself, it became the last straw for Honami to finally make the decision in sharing her past with him while Miyabi promises not to say a single word about it outside their meeting room. As Miyabi was an exception, Honami made it clear to herself to not speak a word about her crime to anyone publicly other than him the moment she was enrolled into high school until her enemy and rival, Arisu Sakayanagi found out about it later down the line.

Not long after Arisu learned of Honami's past through the words of Miyabi himself, rumors of her possibly being a criminal that is yet to be confirmed starts circulating and spreading in droves by the people of Class 1-A during her first-year as a freshman. Out of all the rumors that got to her head and broke her mental resistance, it was only this one that pushed Honami to return back to being a shut-in and locked herself away at home, like the time in middle school. Isolated in her dormitory room for a lot of days, Honami refuses to actively attend high school or her class everyday anymore because of such a rumor that happened to resonate badly with her. When none of her fellow classmates and friends were able to successfully reach out to Honami, the only person who came through in the end was none other than Kiyotaka who did as he succeeded in breaking what was left of the former's fighting spirit. Thanks to Kiyotaka's persistent effort and time in stopping by to visit her every single day of the week and being consulted by him outside the door to her room, Honami decided to reveal the weak side she has about the secret of her past experience. Due to this turning point between herself and Kiyotaka, she is able to come to terms with her history and sins, no longer desiring to run away from everything and face Arisu head-on together with the rest of her classmates as a united class. With her resolve renewed after Kiyotaka's help of being all ears and ready to listen to her troubles, Honami was able to bounce back stronger than before and make a speedy recovery mentally. From that moment on, Honami resumed going to school and attended class, meeting up with all her classmates who were worried about the former all this time while she was gone. Before long, she and her classmates were then confronted by Arisu and the latter's subordinates of Class 1-A wherein Honami proceeded to openly disclose her secret to everyone present in and outside the classroom of how it is closely related to the one rumor among many about her that wasn't false. Because of everyone remaining supportive and respectful to Honami despite learning the full details behind her past, she was able to resolutely and strongly hold her own against Arisu, resisting the latter's constant barrage of verbal attacks and the underhanded strategy used by Class 1-A.

Throughout her first-year from beginning to end, it was revealed that Honami had spent a year with her classmates, and protected the position of Class 1-B from ever changing or getting dethroned. Surrounded by so many companions she befriended over the course of time spent together as friends from the same class, her school life had been smooth sailing at first. However, near the end of her time as a freshman and during the beginning of the second-year, the gap between the strengths and weaknesses of the classes behind was closing in due to the heavy losses she and her classmates suffered in the Event Selection Exam. Although defeat had finally caught up to Honami, and it was staring into her eyes like a reflection, she continued maintaining her fighting spirit for as long as possible under Kiyotaka's promise to meet her again a year later about his answer to her question concerning whether she can or still be able to win in the future. Currently, Honami felt a bit uneasy judging that a large difference between the classes in terms of class points and combat ability was growing at a rapid pace. By objectively analyzing the ongoing situation about herself, her classmates and students from the other classes, she is worried that the class at the bottom next year would likely be her own group overall. This was Honami basing it on Class 1-B's very slow growth rate when compared to their rival classes who are outpacing them each and every step of the way than they could possibly keep up against. Honami wants to do what she can to prevent herself and her own classmates from falling further behind the curve while her opponents are growing increasingly powerful over time.

At some point, during her 2nd-year of attending high school, she decided to withdraw from the Student Council over a year later in order to mainly concentrate on her class battles as well as carrying out old but new dreams for the future with a stronger sense of resolve than ever before. However, there's more to the story behind why she came to the decision of quitting the Student Council, dropping out of the presidential race and leaving it all behind were also in part because of her own past crime as a shoplifter that cannot be tolerated or overlooked publicly. To add on to that, the former B-class led under her leadership have suffered from too many terrible losses during previous exams and competitions against rival classes that it badly affected their class ranking overall, resulting in she and her classmates falling down to D at the time and them falling behind the most in terms of class points. As all the former Student Council Presidents in the school's history has thus far managed to graduate from Class A compared to the likes of her who has recently fell to the lowest rank, that too must've been her justified reason to not even want to compete with Suzune Horikita in the presidential election and run for office.

Abilities

Honami is skilfully great in many different kinds of fields be it academics, collaboration, or communication. In fact, it was said that her leadership, appearance, academics and achievements during her first year in high school were given recognition by other fellow students including the popular ones such as Miyabi Nagumo and Kikyō Kushida. This similarly coincides with her set of interpersonal and negotiation skills, where there were times when she once made fair deals and conditions with all sorts of people to beat an exam and prevent expulsion of students. In one instance, Honami successfully forces Arisu Sakayanagi to cough up even more private points than the latter necessarily suggested as part of the contract when arranging the formation of a class alliance. Through unknown means, she has acquired millions of private points which caused Kiyotaka Ayanokōji to question how she obtained that much. Honami uses those points to reward people in exchange for their cooperation if they are willing to share valuable details on things related to a case that could help solve the Ken incident. She has a very good and cordial relationship with her peers and friends, becoming well-trusted by them within a short matter of time after her enrollment as a freshman. During her first year in high school, she was capable of getting her class unified and cooperating in and out of school under her leadership without any trouble at all. Particularly, according to her homeroom teacher Chie, she quickly rallied Class 1-B when it was still in disarray. When she shows her strong resolve backed by her self-determined expression and words, Kiyotaka was able to see why everyone in Class 1-B who have been supporting Ichinose would have no choice but to listen to her and obey. She is the type of person who faces her opponent head-on by normally following the rules and conditions of any exam without working her way around them.

The reason behind why Honami was able to stockpile more private points than anybody else was because she happened to be acting as the bank of her class, where every classmate gave up portions of their points to her. As part of the class contract, all of her classmates routinely transferred a percentage of their points to her each and every month ever since the first day of school. This was done so that in the event that expulsion was on the line that affected the fate of her classmates, Honami could find a way to deal with it, using the accumulated points gathered over the course of time.

Later on, Honami ended up using all the private points she had to prevent one of her classmates from getting expelled during The Class Poll special exam.[22] As a result of this, Kiyotaka assumed that Honami shouldn't have had any more private points leftover to spend as they had been used up completely. However, it was revealed by Honami that she still had around 3,000 private points remaining, after selling her hairdryer to Class A's Nishikawa. She had done all that in order to buy more time while surviving under these meager amounts for her daily life in the middle of spring break until April finally arrived during the beginning of her second-year. The private points were redistributed back to Honami.

According to Kakeru, Honami was not someone good enough that could fit to be a natural-born leader based on the analysis he pieced together from his classmates, including Hiyori Shiina, Mio Ibuki, and Daichi Ishizaki. For that reason, Kakeru thinks of Honami as the kind of person who was better off offering support to a class leader rather than being the one who led others. He concludes that as long as his class did not actually do her classmates any harm, she would just choose to drop the matter entirely. From the first-year story, Daichi Ishizaki describes Class 1-B at the time led by Honami to be merely nothing more than her own army of admirers that made her and them seem like a powerful adversary in special exams whenever team competitions are involved.

Meanwhile, Honami also possesses at least some technical skills to a certain degree whereby she smartly utilizes the school's homepage and it's global chat app to get her statement across and seek out more cooperation that way besides her class. It coincides with how Honami is able to proceed forward with looking for clues across the web based on the people who answer her messages when investigating the Ken incident. On the other hand, this includes Honami arranging an appointed place, date and time for when to hold a face-to-face meeting with her allies like some of the new first-year students.

According to her homeroom teacher Chie Hoshinomiya, as far as her grades and attitude are concerned for the class, Honami remains number one in these areas without question. However, her teacher states that her true place in society outside school cannot be measured by numbers like that alone. For this reason, her teacher was eagerly determined to have Honami face a difficult challenge by hoping that she can learn something from watching Kiyotaka. For instance, during the Cruise Ship Special Test, Chie wanted Honami to sharply pick up on Kiyotaka's hidden abilities and whatever schemes he might be plotting secretly. Rather than put Honami in a Dragon group full of class representatives where she was supposed be placed in, Chie opted to instead have her be added into the Rabbit group which Kiyotaka was a part of. This was done so in order to make Honami quietly observe his actions from afar which she eventually catches on later once the exam was almost at its end.

From Arisu's description about her, Honami's goodness is a testament of both her own strength and weakness in and of itself when something as that can easily be taken advantage of by the likes of others. As a matter of fact, she naively viewed Kiyotaka to be a natural ally and the most trustworthy person in her school life, refusing to identify him as an enemy while remaining distrustful of enemies whom are a lot like the latter in nature.

Academic Abilities

Honami happened to be a very intelligent and smart person who is said to be on par with the students from Class A academically. Another notable achievement is that she is able to fulfil her responsibilities of being the class representative effortlessly without her grades dropping in the slightest. As for her role, Honami was known to participate in face-to-face discussions regarding school matters such as when Kiyotaka caught sight of her being involved with her homeroom teacher Chie Hoshinomiya and things related to the Student Council. Honami's mother went as far as strictly telling Honami to be a studious student who needs to prioritise studying while in school by having the girl focus on her studies rather than finding a job so as to be employed at an early age. Both in high school and even during middle school, she was highly regarded as an honours student, taking care of helping peers with difficulties such as improving their academic performances before a test. Honami once formed a study group session with classmates and friends and they were able to make passing scores on a quiz after briefly being tutored by her.[23] This further suggests that teaching and tutoring others are also one of her many fortes academically, as she was able to help her classmates improve and understand the different concepts better than the school system. It was also mentioned by Suzune Horikita that Honami would have normally been put in Class A for her excellent abilities, but was forced to Class 1-B for reasons unknown to her. One of her classmates even states that had the school used only grades to determine Honami's placement among the classes, she would be undoubtedly been put in Class A.[24]

In the light novels, it was revealed that she scored the highest points in the entrance exams. Her outstanding grades on those various tests was very well-received to the point where it would later on be spread by her homeroom teacher, Chie Hoshinomiya to the former Vice-President of the Student Council, Miyabi Nagumo to help increase Honami's chances of joining that organization. Fortunately, this talent in the end was what allowed Honami to become an official member of the student body organization without the approval of the previous President, Manabu Horikita. During her middle school days, she was once also affiliated with the Student Council there as a former member and having successfully climbed her way up to the highest position of power as President back then. According to Arisu, Honami as an honors student has always been at the top when it comes to doing well on several tests and never falls at the bottom.[25] For instance, she was able to properly carry on with her studies before the end-of-school year exam and prepared for it after making a short recovery from the mental attacks by Arisu who orchestrated the rumors to spread about her.

Aside from that, Honami appears to have some degree of knowledge of the necessary survival skills she possesses to help her classmates while setting up the system of their class's camping site during the Deserted Island Special Test. For instance, she was able to smartly take advantage of her surroundings, managing to make total use of the various trees nearby through stringing it with a hammock in an open-space environment. On the other hand, she and Arisu often have their names get noticed by their peers for the amazing exam scores they achieved with their academic skills. Honami was noted by Kiyotaka to always remain at the top for the written exams. When it comes to the difference in the scores on mathematical exams, Teruhiko Yukimura happened to bring up either the names of Honami or Arisu as a comparison of being in the highest categories within the grade level to one of his peers. Particularly, to Teruhiko, it shouldn't be normally possible for someone like Kiyotaka himself to easily exceed Honami's points and get a perfect math score and answered the most difficult question based on his classmate being rated academically low in the OAA app.

Physical Abilities

Not much is clearly known about Honami's physical capabilities, although it is mentioned in her short story at Year 1 Light Novel Volume 3 that she's not very skilled in athletics with the fact that her ability to maintain equilibrium is dull. Despite her weakness, she's still capable of handling sports with a bit of skill to some degree. She confidently claims that her running speed is fairly fast.[26] She even acknowledges the extent of her speed is based on her own past experience with participating in the track and field club activities before. Not only that but a glimpse of her ability was also shown at the pool, where she played volleyball with her friends and students of Class D. In the following volumes, although she was not in anyway confident about her physical capabilities overall, Honami admits she was at least very proud of her own remarkable speed specifically while attempting to outrun two powerfully-trained adult men like Tsukishiro and Katsunori Shiba. Nonetheless, despite how fast she pushed herself to run, Honami could still end up losing her footing along the way after accidentally slipping into tricky terrains that are hard and troublesome to get out of. For instance, when placed in a dangerous situation where it takes a heavy toll on her mental state like feeling delirious, this hampers Honami's ability to steadily maintain her physical movement. By then, Honami would lose complete control of her own equilibrium and balance, mindlessly taking steps without precautions to escape the environment before falling under the ground.

Honami even boasted to Kiyotaka of how fast and adept she could reflexively switch between different clothing than any other girl her age could, expressing confidence about her quick-change abilities. During a pool volleyball game against Class 1-D, Honami was known to try her absolute hardest to keep the ball in play, but her movements in the water were slow and dull, making her reaction time come off as being weak enough for her opponent team to take advantage of. In the Sports Festival, Honami placed second in an event whilst securing fourth or fifth place in the other events. Honami would pair herself up with Class 1-B's ace Sō Shibata who was more athletically skilled than she was during a three-legged race as a pair, working together alongside him to try and win the competition despite the difference in their physical capabilities.[27] During the Uninhabited Island Exam, Honami was also capable of walking continuously nonstop for at least around four and a half hours to finally be able to catch up to Kiyotaka and reach his side without taking a break to rest. Kiyotaka notes Honami was the type of girl that attentively makes sure she's staying healthy concerning her body. However, Honami having a mental trauma about the history of her terrible past experience for too long can cause harm to her physical body in more ways than one. For starters, it can terribly lead to the weakening of her own immune system, leaving Honami to become a bit vulnerable to a cold fever, oversleeping and feeling hungry while in a sick state until she took time off to recover from.

During the Fall season (mid-September) of her 2nd year, she decided to hit the Keyaki Mall gym for the first time and exorcise in the hopes of improving her physical abilities whenever she have the leisure to do it. As of December, she's been attending it for already over two months straight to help keep herself fit physically and her own body in shape. This location became a typical training ground for both Honami and Kiyotaka to frequent together as the two of them with shared interest unbeknownst to each other, sought to become stronger than their current self respectively.

Intellectual Abilities

Honami has an insightful and intuitive side to her intellect,[28] as she recognised the true and well-hidden intelligence of Kiyotaka Ayanokōji and saw that he is someone who shouldn't had been placed in Class D to begin with. This inquisitive side was seen once again as she wisely took note of the students in Class D who have the huge potential to ascend to upper classes based on their talents and how they should not be underestimated no matter what their reputations described about them. She is able to read the mood and atmosphere of people, easily noticing that her presence is not positively welcome by the Ayanokōji Group after meeting Kiyotaka with his circle of new friends for the first time. More so, she carefully considers the implications and possibilities behind why someone like her was placed in the Rabbit Group rather than be part of the Dragon Group which was composed of class leaders. From the anime, she appears to have a great perception of reading people's feelings for someone as she easily catches onto Airi Sakura's obvious romantic attraction towards Kiyotaka.

Let alone that, Kiyotaka in the light novels described Honami to have incredible insight and observation skills, showing how keenly deductive her ability to see through whatever sort of plans both her allies and foe alike have in store for her. As a matter of fact, in the Cruise Ship, she could still somehow managed to piece a few hints together with very little to no physical pieces of evidence provided or left behind even if it happened behind close doors where the former was not around to see. This was just by visually analyzing the person's subtle actions including their uncharacteristic behaviors and figure out what they were actually doing without anyone else in the room to pick up on it except for herself who did. For starters, Honami was faintly aware and suspicious of the inconspicuous interaction between Kiyotaka and Teruhiko Yukimura plus his peculiar eye-to-eye communication with Kei Karuizawa, goes to show that she do possessed knowledge about body language skills to some extent such as eye reading.

During an exam which requires communication and cooperation, she also exhibited the necessary skill set of being a mediator to handle arguments of opposing parties. She is diplomatically adept and was able to carefully get people from different classes to open up and start a conversation with one another. Striking a friendly conversation with a student outside her class can also be seen as Honami's method of trying to gather valuable pieces of information about others. Compared to the other first-year class leaders who manipulate their schemes nefariously behind the scene, Honami was viewed as the opposite in the spectrum and handle competitions the fair and just way even if there are advantages and disadvantages of doing so. She was considered to be the one and only innocent, pure-minded class leader among the bunch during their first-year who hasn't once resorted to the idea of using malicious strategies and tactics like they do to win special exams, as it goes against her morals and principles.

Spoiler warning: Plot from light novel beyond official English releases details follow. Click here to show spoilers.

She was even able to intuitively catch onto Kiyotaka's phone-swapping strategy as a double-layered trap and how he had it setup without anyone in their group noticing except for her. After Ryūji was first enrolled in Advanced Nurturing High School and assigned to her class, he described how Honami's leadership skills were superior to those from the other classes, wasting no time in choosing to support the latter as her assistant. It was thanks to Honami's effort in keeping the class united together and closely knit that all her classmates can confidently show overwhelmingly solid teamwork and a strong sense of camaraderie with one another without infighting. Working to carry out Suzune's (Kiyotaka's) camera surveillance strategy, she had the acting skills to put up a good act in playing according to their scheme that they set up. When she and Kiyotaka corner and trap the provocateurs from Class 1-C who were framing Ken Sudō for causing violence, Honami was able to confidently bluff and deceive them without revealing any hints of lies behind her actions and expressions.

Honami is shown to have an innate talent of being able to completely see through anyone's hidden motives or strategies while arguing or discussing anything with them as was shown twice in Volume 4 and then again in Volume 2 of the Second Year Arc. During the middle of the Cruise Ship Special Test, Honami was capable of demonstrating her powers of persuasion to get students from opposing classes to her side and become the de-facto leader of the Rabbit Group, being able to take tactical action while also gaining their approval at the same time. She was able to completely expose Kōhei Katsuragi's strategy, proposed by Machida, for being favourable only to Class-A, and was able to bring the students of other Classes to her side in being against the passivise strategy. Honami also went so far as to play card games with the people she hardly knew anything about in that group to gain a better understanding of them. She was also later able to completely shred apart Kiyotaka's plan of swapping the mobile phones with Teruhiko Yukimura. Honami figures out that the double layer of also unlocking the SIM cards and switching it around between the two cell phones, using private points to help with her deduction as she herself had thought of something similar in mind like he did.[29]

Kiyotaka describes one of the cons about Honami’s ability to include the people from her class was that it is strong enough to kill off her own classmates’ individualities. He admits that the downside to Honami having such a powerful weapon was how there are a lack of people around her who could proficiently wield it. In a way, Honami's classmates would be overly dependent on her as the leader who is responsible for the class. Hence, Kiyotaka considers it as being a vicious circle which made her classmates lose even more of their individualism and not think for themselves by leaving everything like making strategies and decisions to Honami. More so, Arisu refers to Honami's powerful weapon to be none other than the fact that she has "trust" itself, the kind in which no other class possesses but she alone does as her strength. According to Arisu, by joining forces with Honami, one can feel confident and sure that someone as she would never betray her ally no matter what happens in a situation.[30]

More so, Kiyotaka considers Honami to be special in that regard as she is placed in the position of either number one or two whenever it comes down to being the most trustworthy student in their school year. As a class leader, she is quite regarded as a very reliable and dependable person to turn to when the opposing side chose to cooperate with a different class such as her own, knowing the former was not willing to betray an ally or a friend. Arisu even knows that if there was a talent capable of being able to bring together the three classes (B, C, and D) to cooperate and face off against Class 2-A, it would most likely be Honami herself who could make such alliance a reality. All of her classmates trusted Honami's words because they had come to understand over the course of their first year spent together that she happened to speak on behalf of Class 2-B as a whole. With or without a proper reason regardless of whether Honami's actions and decisions seem beneficial to the class overall. This means sometimes leaving them in the dark of things while carrying out her strategy such as the former deal she once made with Miyabi before abandoning it in favor of Kiyotaka's strategy to hold a deal with Kakeru's class for securing private points. The weakness of the weapon Honami has as "trust" is if she happened to be the one placing her trust on someone or entrusting an individual with something like a secret but only to end up being betrayed by the latter later on. For instance, despite Honami having told her fellow student council member Miyabi to promise not to say a word about her secret to anyone, he still went and did it anyway by exposing her secret to Arisu.[31]

During the second-year story, when undertaking a special exam that requires her fellow classmates partnering up with the new first-year students, she would take the initiative of focusing on forming friendship-type of ties based on mutual trust first as Class 2-B's main priority. This was pretty much said to be her exclusive method of doing things with the support of her class, trying to establish a trusting relationship by accepting companionship with the more academically inferior students, while winning over the help of the honors students along the way. The same could be said for another one of Honami's weapons being her "kind-heartedness" to the people around her regardless of their class standing or year they're from which Suzune acknowledged as genuine. However, Suzune also stated such a weapon can also end up being part of Honami's weakness and disadvantage in the competitive class environment they’re placed in between their classes. The more kind-hearted she was to others around her, the easier it was for bad people like Miyabi to try and use her for their own nefarious purposes manipulatively. Despite this, Kiyotaka recognises and believes Honami is able to know how to distinguish between good and evil, putting the safety of her classmates first before everyone else outside her class unless it is him who she also feels need protecting. Reasonably so, it could be viewed as a double-edged weapon to Honami's leadership due to having multiple strengths and weaknesses mixed in that may lead her class to face favourable and unfavourable consequences. In the first place, Honami is the type of person who prefers to build trust, confidence, and safety from the ground up between herself, her classmates, and allies while proceeding with negotiations. She is not a natural leader and would do better with a supporting role, but seeing how she is the most qualified in her class to lead, she was able to carry the mantle well all things considered. With every defeat, it all serves to make her stronger and smarter which every other leader seems to take notice of and wants to take her out before she becomes too powerful.

Because of that, during an exam and class competition, Honami's capacity to deal with sudden accidents or turn of events unknown to her was by no means one of her strong suits in this area where she is unable to neither fight back in resistance nor launch a counterattack. While this wouldn't be much of a problem against an average opponent, it was a different story altogether against somebody who plays dirty like Kakeru. She has a policy of maintaining her class's position of non-aggressive defence against their enemies without resorting to violence or despicable means.[32] Arisu admits that if they were to compete on equal footing, Honami would definitely not be weaker than the leader of Class 2-A since the two were facing each other off in a fair battle. However, when she is placed in a disadvantageous situation due to unfair tactics and schemes in play, Honami cannot strongly demonstrate her true strengths as per usual during head-on battles. She could only remain helplessly silent after being attacked through her weaknesses without baring her fangs til the very end in the midst of hardships like either Kakeru or Arisu would've done compared to the former. According to the words of Ryūji, she lacks the ability to deal with emergency situations that stood in their class's way of winning an exam like her classmates getting food poisoned by an enemy behind the scene. He also noted how Honami has a huge weakness in being unable to abandon the weak and helpless, not leaving the powerless on their own to be ostracised and expelled which could have served to lighten her load and discard the burdens of the class.[33] During the 2nd year story, it proves to be a detrimental problem when Honami admits to compromising her own classmates' safety for the first time in order to warn Kiyotaka,[34] the person who she deeply harbours a lot of affection and care for more than even all of them combined. She told him about the Acting Director, Tsukishiro and Class 1-D's Teacher, Shiba's schemes as they were secretly plotting to expel him in I2 and was distraught when he still decided to do so. Only after him reassuring her that he will be fine and that he is doing it to protect her and her classmates did she finally relent and allowed him to go.[35]

In that regard, Honami would not mind losing out on the benefits of winning an exam or obtaining a top position if it means being able to save her own classmates along with the first-year students from expulsion. Due to her kind nature and willingness to extend a helping hand to those who are in need of help, Masayoshi Hashimoto of Class 2-A does not consider Honami very much of a threat to compete with his class. He thinks that Honami's actions of bringing lowly-skilled academic students from a different year onto her side is just gonna end up backfiring in the end, dragging herself down along with the rest of her class who continue to stand by her decision without questioning it. To him, he deems Honami as the type of leader who lacks the strong ambition to win beneficial advantages like class points during an exam for her fellow classmates when she was even willing to give more priority on helping to save the low-level academic first-year students as well besides them than strategically thinking to aim for Class A in general. This means that no matter how terrible their Academic Ability rating is, she will go out of her way to help them regardless by centering her strategy around it and not primarily keeping the focus of her battle plans on overcoming her competitors. During one such test which is the Partner Exam, she prioritises rescuing the worse-off students over the far more academically capable ones.[36]

After the 2nd year special written exam concluded, Honami had an arranged meeting with Kakeru about how the end results turned out the way it did, telling the latter that such an intimidation strategy from him is not effective anymore. As that kind of aggressive tactic has been overly used on her class multiple times, she has already come up with a way around bypassing his repetitive scheme. This was by Honami having her classmates performed a "fake it til they make it" approach, pretending that they're intimated by Kakeru's lackeys and won't be able to concentrate but still carry on with their daily studies regardless. Because he failed to catch wind of this approach by her, Honami was able to lead her class in beating Kakeru's class and winning the special exam. Not only this, Honami has also undergone a drastic change with herself mentally to the point where she's not willing to always rely on virtuous and fair methods any longer in order to win. When Kakeru encourages her to work together with him as an accomplice, Honami refuses as she acknowledged her calculating mentality deep down is already more than sufficient to take action in accordance to what her instinct is telling her to do so unintentionally.

During the time when she had gone missing in the middle of the school trip unbeknownst to her classmates, Honami has shown to actually have a cunning side all along where she unconsciously planned for it to happen despite no ill will or intention behind doing this, instead of it all being a deliberate action. Wanting to get Kiyotaka's help through a dire situation she incidentally put herself in as the intended target to later be found by the latter, Honami without even knowing it manipulated him into attempting to look for her, which proved to be a success in and of itself. In other words, her disappearing all of a sudden was simply a matter of instinct done on her part but she was unconsciously aware of it all this time. Honami took into consideration a slight chance where her classmates will tried to make a move and act in response to the unpredictable choices she made for herself. For instance, Honami choosing to go missing during a stormy weather and turning it into a possible commotion or quitting the Student Council without offering a proper explanation to her class unless Kiyotaka is involved in finding out the reason about that decision first instead of them.

Furthermore, Honami was believed by Arisu to have a very potent "hidden ability" that made even the latter and Kakeru to reconsider who to be more cautious of among class leaders after they originally thought she was an easy, weak target to trick for their manipulation and scheming to work without problem. According to Kiyotaka, individual ability-wise, Honami had the capability to put up resistance against the likes of Kakeru, Arisu, and Suzune. Though depending on the kind of situation she finds herself favorable in, it was said that Honami has the capacity to surpass all three class leaders. This was the case when Arisu tried to manipulate her by showing concern over Honami's feelings for Kiyotaka and how he cannot be trusted. Despite being warned how she's acting under his control, Honami refuses to believe the words of her sworn enemy, seeing through Arisu's foul attempt to manipulate and mislead her into distancing from Kiyotaka. When Honami brought up Arisu's feelings for Kiyotaka and interest in him, she managed to somehow upset Arisu and put the latter on edge, as the Class A leader didn't have the high ground that she always got against her until now.

When Kiyotaka went on a date with her for the first time, he was surprised by how particularly observational and perceptive Honami is as she was able to tell what the true reason for the two meeting up other than them hanging out together. Ever since that day of the school trip when Kiyo hugged Honami while comforting her, he isn't able to properly understand what's going on in her head and not certain what emotions the latter was feeling at the time after talking to her again. In fact, Kakeru revealed how overly obsessive Honami is with Kiyotaka to the extent that she went as far as even admitting to herself of thinking about him and watching him all the time during their date. This obsession plays a part in how she was able to easily guess how unusual and uncharacteristic Kiyotaka is acting in front of her by posing abnormal questions that he normally wouldn't ask about if it was his usual behavior on the surface. For example, Honami acutely deduced how Kiyotaka must've already met up with Mako Amikura ahead of time before their date happen without knowing anything about it herself based on the recent encounter she had with her classmate and the strange eye-to-eye contact he was communicating to Mako. Connecting the dots, Honami was able to correctly found out that her other classmate Norihito Watanabe must have also had some involvement with Kiyotaka as she narrows it down to him being one of the male peers from her class he befriended during the school trip to probe such information out of her on his behalf.

Quotes

  • (To Kakeru Ryūen): "I'm sorry, Ryuuen-kun. But you've hurt people in Class B with your actions. Even if it's possible for us to get more points, I can't ally with you on that reason alone."
  • (To Kiyotaka Ayanokōji): "I'm not lying. I think that lying might be necessary in competition, but I like to be honest as much as possible. I do want my class to win, fair and square. I thought the road to victory lay in narrowing down who the V.I.P. is. Ah, you don't have to tell me anything if you don't want to, Ayanokōji-kun. I just wanted to explain my feelings. I thought if I told you, things might be easier."
  • (To Kiyotaka Ayanokōji): "My classmates...My friends in the other classes...Everyone’s been trying to convince me to return to school, telling me: If you have something troubling you, please come and talk to us about it. And yet, Ayanokōji-kun, you've never asked me anything like that, all while coming by to visit me every single day...Why?"
  • (To Kiyotaka Ayanokōji): "Anywho, the school is pretty terrible, isn't it? What with making someone drop out of school and all. Even if you manage to get praise votes from the kids in the other classes, someone still has to leave in the end."
  • (To Kiyotaka Ayanokōji): "That's not true at all! Rather, I honestly think it would be the most justified vote in the entire exam. It's meant to be for someone worthy of praise in another class. Yeah, I can't think of anyone more worthy than you, as the one who saved me."
  • (To Ryūji Kanzaki): "It's fine. Kanzaki-kun, you once told me that if somebody has the power to change things, they're nothing more than a fool if they don't make use of it, right? That's why I've been reflecting on what I could do for all of you."
  • (To Kiyotaka Ayanokōji): "We've lost our private points, but we can always make them back again. But, if we had lost even a single person, there would've been no way to get them back.
  • (To Arisu Sakayanagi): "Class B also came here with a strategy, ready to win. We won't lose easily, especially in an exam like this where unity and cooperation play such an important part."
  • (To Kakeru Ryūen): "'Then, are you saying you'll go easy on me?"
  • (To Kakeru Ryūen): "I wish you wouldn't. You don't have a protection point and you're fighting with your back up against the wall. Somehow I can't help but feel like this is a bad omen for Class B."
  • (To Kiyotaka Ayanokōji): "I've always been relying on you recently, Ayanokōji-kun. I've received more help than anyone else. If I say this audaciously… No, I can't say it, it's too unsightly."
  • (To Ryūji Kanzaki): "Kanzaki-kun, don’t say it like that. No matter what class it is, they'll have their own ideas, and of course, their own strategies."
  • (To Ryūji Kanzaki): "'Ayanokouji-kun is not our enemy."
  • (To Ryūji Kanzaki): "That's...but there's no point for us to engage in a pointless dispute!"
  • (To Arisu Sakayanagi): "What makes me sad is that this isn't a happy proposal. After all, it implies that our class is not worthy of your caution, an insignificant existence to you."
  • (To Arisu Sakayanagi): "Although it's nice to receive that evaluation from you, we're in a situation where we don't care anymore, right?"
  • (To Arisu Sakayanagi): "You said we were someone you could trust, and I think you meant that. However, the most important thing for you is to prevent Class B, Class C, and Class D from working together to catch up to Class A. Indeed, the amount of class points we can get if we win together will decrease, but there's no guarantee that such a development wouldn't appear in the future— That the three classes would continue to help each other."
  • (To Arisu Sakayanagi): "With that our contract is complete. Even if you hadn't offered to loan me the deposit points, I would have chosen to join forces with you. Our main goal is of course to reach Class A, but as you said, we fell to Class C and we can't afford to fall even more. Since, if we fall down to Class D, our class's motivation would surely be greatly reduced, and that is something we want to avoid."

Trivia

  • Different from how the light novel series depict Honami where she's actually sincere and forthright, her anime counterpart in the final episode of the adaptation portray her to have the facial expression of a two-faced, sly person all along after the Deserted Island Special Test came to an end.
  • Honami is the only class leader known thus far to have participated in two or more class alliances of the same grade level, one of which being with Suzune Horikita during her first-year and the other recently being with Arisu Sakayanagi during her second-year in high school.
  • Honami is the only leader able to prevent her fellow classmates from dropping out of school, having not lost any one of them in her Class 1-B by expulsion when compared to the leaders of the other three classes.
  • The number of private points Honami had managed to acquire in her first year of high school is by far the largest a first-year student has ever obtained among those that have been recorded.
  • The reason as to why Honami had been assigned to Class 1-B instead of Class 1-A was due to her strange long absences during middle school.
    • Her constant absences didn't occur daily until somewhere in the middle of her third year before graduation.
  • In the first-year story of You-Zitsu series, Honami was originally the only 1st-year known to have been able to join the Student Council.[37] However, by the start of the second-year arc, she was no longer the only second-year student in that Student Council with Suzune being recruited by Miyabi Nagumo to become part of the student body.[30]
  • Honami has been confessed to a total of five times throughout the course of her school life, all of which she turned down; one of which being from Chihiro Shiranami in high school, one from her time in elementary school, and the remaining three were likely during her middle school life.
  • Honami's ranking in the "Female Character" category for Takarajimasha's Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! guidebook are as follows:

    • Kakeru Ryūen of Class 1-C drawing suspicions on Honami by blaming her for the disappearance of her own classmates going missing during the Event Selection Exam as some of them did not participate in the class competitions.
    • Kiyotaka of Class 1-D started the false rumour of Honami collecting a massive amount of private points illegally to spread, while using the name of a different student as a cover-up to hide his identity as the real perpetrator.
    • Miyabi Nagumo of Class 3-A also known as the President of the Student Council, forced her into a dilemma with the choice being allowing her classmates to be expelled or being with an intimate relationship with him and having him saved said classmate from expulsion. He also made sure to press her to make the decision quickly and not make him wait.
  • For the 2nd Year arc, when asked about her aspirations for the next year, Honami answered 'To properly redeem myself from my past and once again aim for class A without losing any one of my classmates.'[38]
  • Honami, Arisu and Tsubasa Nanase are the only trio of students from Advanced Nurturing High School known so far to each hear the term, "White Room" in the current storyline as outsiders who weren't raised there.
    • Excluding Arisu who already has some knowledge of what the "White Room" means from an outsider perspective, neither Honami nor Tsubasa knows anything about it whatsoever except for the fact about how the two of them have stumble upon learning that term by chance due to hearing such word came out of either Tsukishiro's mouth or Katsunori Shiba's.
