Ryūji Kanzaki (神 (かん) 崎 (ざき) 隆 (りゅう) 二 (じ) , Kanzaki Ryūji) is one of the class representatives of Class 1-B.

Ryūji is a young man of average height with violet-bluish hair and purple eyes.

Personality

Not much is known about Ryūji, but he appears to be a diligent student who behaves seriously and he is a very helpful person as shown when he aided Honami Ichinose in the case of Ken Sudō.

He is a friendly person as he does not look down on Class D and gets along with them. He sat with Honami to talk after the survival test and shared a laugh with her about how their class lost after coming in second.

It is shown Ryūji is not the kind of individual who would openly put himself in the limelight. He is described as a man with hardly any words to say, appearing to lack the assertiveness to engage others even while he remains popular with the girls. He doesn't seem to be well-understood by others. However, he is very loyal to a fault and will speak up on behalf of the class's feelings, asking meaningful questions that the rest of his classmates wouldn't do. Let alone that, he can still go out of his way and assert his dominance on those who speak wrongly about his fellow classmates, including Honami, when a rumor was spread negatively about her.

Despite his calm and composed behavior, Ryūji can show his aggressive side to either Kiyotaka or Masayoshi Hashimoto upon finding something suspicious or off with them. When he sees one of his classmates like Honami suffering, Ryūji himself would be faced with a constant state of stress and completely unable to feel relaxed.

Plot

Ryūji is first introduced in his class when their teacher Chie Hoshinomiya announced their class grades after a quiz. Later on, he is asked by Honami Ichinose to help Class D prove the innocence of Ken Sudo. Ryūji agreed and put up flyers searching for witnesses of the attack. She later brought him along to meet Kiyotaka Ayanokōji, who saw the flyers, and mentioned to Kiyotaka that it was Ryūji's idea. When Honami got alerted, he was intrigued because they obtained information about Daichi Ishizaki, which prompted Ryūji to doubt Class C's story leading him to believe the attack was a set-up. He leaves with Honami, who promises Kiyotaka that she will provide more information to him if they find some.

During the survival test, he and Honami went to Class C camp, but they found it deserted. They were joined by Kiyotaka and Airi Sakura who were scouting the forest but ended up at the beach. Ryūji asked Kiyotaka if he was scouting as well, but the latter replied it was just by chance as Honami lamented the fact that she didn't get the chance to discover Class C's leader. Ryūji told her what the purpose of the test was, to which she agreed with him. When Kiyotaka asked Honami about Kōhei Katsuragi, both she and Ryūji informed him of his status as one of Class A' leaders alongside Arisu Sakayanagi, even detailing how there appeared to be a leadership conflict between the two.

On the final day of the test, Class B chose not to guess the leaders of the other camps since their bonus points would be negated if they were wrong. When the results were given, Class B was in second place while Class D was in first, leaving Class A in third place and Class C last. Ryūji was surprised at these results along with the rest of his class.

After returning to the cruise ship, Ryūji sat with Honami and they talked about the survival test. Honami happily stated that it was their class' loss even if they were second, something he agreed with. She soon changed the topic by questioning him over what they were told about points and how they could decide on what to do with them, as he pondered about her question.

Ryūji is seen with his class celebrating the class point result after the Paper Shuffle test.

In Volume 10, he volunteered himself to get the most criticism votes during the special exam, Class Poll. However, he wasn't expelled thanks to 20 million private points from the class.

Intellectual Abilities

As a student of Class B, Ryūji is intelligent, which is manifested when he recognized the fact that three boys from Class C could have overpowered Ken Sudō due to their athletic abilities. His theory was proven to be correct as the attack was a set-up to frame Sudō to get him expelled.

He has proven to be very perceptive, being able to sense something is amiss with Kiyotaka after he got a high score.

Name Etymology

• The name Ryūji consists of kanjis that mean "noble, prosperous" (隆) (ryū) and "two" (二) (ji).
• Ryūji's surname consists of kanjis that mean means "god" (神) (kan) and "cape, peninsula" (崎) (saki/zaki).

Trivia

• Ryūji shares the same student identification number with Satoru Kaneda.
• For the 2nd Year arc, when asked about his aspirations for the next year, he answered 'To change my class so that I will become stronger and able to aim for Class A.
• Thanks to his father's connections Ryuji met Ayanokoji Atsuomi as a child, and later Sakayanagi Arisu.
