Summary[]
On the day the results of the Mock Exam were to be announced, Class 1-B (1st Year)'s Homeroom Teacher, Chie Hoshinomiya is late to class. The students begin speculating over the reason for her being tardy, when Hoshinomiya-sensei enters the classroom, yawning sleepily. She greets the class, admitting that she'd had too much alcohol the day before, hence the reason for her drowsy state. Chihiro Shiranami states that she reeks of the smell, to which Chie replies that the odour would probably be gone by noon. Honami Ichinose admits to herself that although she was indeed an unpresentable teacher, it could also be argued that it was the perfect representation of Class-B's "easy-going" atmosphere and unity. Chie proceeds to stick the results of the mock exam on the board, following which she also explained whatever would happen in the future moving forward. After which, she proceeded to leave the classroom in a nauseous state. Honami relays the information in her head, remembering that if any student scored below the minimum passing score in the mid-term exams, they would be immediately expelled. The results could also influence their class points.
After Chie returns to the class in a more refreshed state, Honami asks her to reveal the results of the other classes as well, considering that the school seemed to be based on a meritocracy where the tests could influence the class points of the class later as well as since the individual scores had been made public, it was only fair to ask the results of the other classes in order to compete in the cram school-like system. Chie compliments her sharp line of thought, but states that while the average scores of each class would indeed be revealed, the same could not be said for the individual scores of students of the other classes. She then posts a slip bearing the average scores of the other classes on the board.
Honami observes that the school was very complex-to get information one had to specifically ask for it, since only the bare minimum were freely shared by the teachers. After observing the result, Shibata says that their class was objectively a very strong one, considering that they only fell short of Class-A's average score by two marks. Honami optimistically believes that since their class was pretty much on par with Class A, they should certainly be able to overtake them if they worked hard enough for the mid-terms. Even though Shibata made a loose statement about the classes lower than them as "idiots", Honami does not believe so, knowing from the school's system that it was not that simple. Observing that her classmates were starting to be too proud of their good result, she decides to test the waters by rhetorically questioning whether that was all the results hid.
She then explains that if the division of the classes was solely based on Academic Ability of students, the lower classes would never be able to fight back or compete with the higher ones, since they would fundamentally already be too weak, leaving no chance of a reversal. However, she tells her classmates to not be pessimistic, since the result was in the end, in their favour as well. Another unidentified classmate agrees with her, stating that while there was indeed a clear difference between Class A and Class D, the class distribution did not seem to be completely based on Academics, since during the process, it was revealed that Honami had ranked first in the entrance exams, and should have been placed in Class A under that theory.
Instead of dwelling on that fact, Honami cheerfully states that since she was in Class B due to some shortcomings or committed mistakes, there could also be equally talented students in the lower classes as well, being placed there due some unseen problems. What she meant by this was that even though at that time those students were nothing more than untapped potential, based on teaching methods they could very well show excellence in Academics. She seems to think defensively, stating since the "battle" would be a three-year long one, it would be best for her class to spend less points and be cautionary about their expenditure.
She further says that while it did not seem like any of their classmates were in immediate danger of expulsion, their objective moving forward should be to study together in sessions in order to raise the class average for the mid-term exams. When asked if she could teach them by a classmate, Honami readily agrees, and soon there were too many students who wanted to participate in group study sessions, to the point that she would not have been able to guide them at once. Ryūji Kanzaki observes this and volunteers to help in teaching the others, to which Honami wholeheartedly accepts, considering his high grades. Following which, Honami gathered the students and went to the library. It was decided that the study group participants would be divided into two groups-one at noon and the other after school, and the number of participants in the noon session were 7, out of the total 15. Since all of Class-B was virtually free from expulsion threats due to the high standard of the students, their main objective would be to overthrow Class-A. When a classmate asked Honami why she had been placed in Class-B even though she had the best grades in the entrance exams, as well as a charismatic personality, she states that she had never really dwelled on that, understanding that the school probably wouldn't make a mistake with the division of students into classes, and adding further that she liked being in her present Class-B and being surrounded by her current classmates, more so than she probably would have been when in Class-A.
Chihiro then jumped on Honami, hugging her and saying she liked her the most, and Mako Amikura joined them, throwing her arms around the two. Sō Shibata also wanted to join the girls but was stopped by Kanzaki, who told him to refrain from doing "stupid" things. Honami deduced that exams in the school seemed to be very important, considering there were multiple groups of students studying in the library from all years. It is revealed that all Class-B students had very strong foundations in the subjects, which allowed them to study in sync without many problems, asking questions here and there.
While they were studying, they suddenly heard a commotion in the library which was caused by a brawl between Yamawaki from Class-C and Ken Sudō from Class-D. Though her classmates tried to persuade her into moving to another place to study due to the disturbance, Honami decided to confront the situation herself. However, her classmates warned her of how dangerous it could be considering Sudo's rumored violent character, and Kanzaki told her that he could go and sort out the argument instead of her. Taking that into consideration, Honami understood that boys had big egos, and the arrival of another boy to mediate could only lead to the matter getting escalated, and therefore, she decided to go handle it herself.
Honami walks up to the pair and politely asks them to stop, only to be told to go away since she was unrelated to their argument by Sudo, but she replies right back that since she was a student utilising the library, she couldn't just ignore the commotion, and if they insisted to fight, they should do it outside. She then warned Yamawaki and his group that they had already provoked Sudo too much and any further provocation on their part would be reported to the school authorities by her. Faced with her determined countenance, both Yamawaki and Sudo fell silent, and Yamawaki and his group left the scene.
When Honami was leaving the scene, a boy appeared in her field of vision for an instant, who she faintly recognised as having been seen in front of the staff room. She was welcomed back to her study group with praises from Chihiro, who called her brave and explained how Yamawaki had ran away when she had confronted him. She added further that the Class-C boys were definitely afraid of her, since in a prior incident, Honami had also settled a dispute between Class-C with Class-B diplomatically. The thought of having afflicted fear in the minds of boys was such a "heavy blow" to her as a girl which made Honami unable to focus on studying for the rest of the lunch break.
