Yōsuke Hirata ( (ひら) () (よう) (すけ) , Hirata Yōsuke) is currently a second-year student of Advanced Nurturing High School. At the start of the series, he was introduced as the class representative and a student of Class 1-D, seated on the leftmost seat of the second row, next to Kei Karuizawa. He is considered as one of the top students in his class. He is also a member of the Soccer Club. His excellent grades are worthy of being in an more elite class; however, he ended up in Class D for reasons yet to be explained.

Appearance

Yōsuke is a young man of average height with blonde hair and brown eyes.

He is often seen wearing the standard school uniform, but when outside of school he wore a striped shirt when he and Kei Karuizawa ran into Suzune Horikita over summer break.

Personality

Yōsuke exudes a very mature and friendly vibe in the presence of other people and is rarely seen getting mad. His warm nature has led to the majority of the class to recognize him as their class representative. He obtained the trust of the class while also attracting the attention of several girls. Most notably Kei Karuizawa, where he accepted a relationship with her to help safeguard her against any sort of bullying that might come to Kei. After she shared her past with him, he empathized and knew that she was afraid of her traumatic experience in middle school recurring once again in high school, and thus, he allowed her to use his reputation as an added precaution against bullies.

Hirata emanates his thoughtfulness personality often. For instance, he covered for Kiyotaka Ayanokōji after he found Karuizawa's underwear on him, believing his explanation of not being the thief as he wouldn't do such a thing, despite not knowing him well or having evidence to prove otherwise.

He displays adequate leadership and diplomatic abilities as shown in the survival test where he managed to get everyone to agree to a consensus after a brief argument over provision and points by voicing his opinion.

Episode 011-13

Yōsuke falls into a state of depression.

Despite all the positive qualities he displays in his class, he can be quite prone to cracking under pressure, as shown when he became horrified after the survival book was burned and was so stunned that he couldn't understand what caused it to happen. He only snapped out of it when he heard Kiyotaka stating that his class was asking for help and needed him to give them orders. He can be extremely naive at times as he was the only one adamantly defending Yamauchi against his other classmates after it was revealed that he betrayed them for Class A and was looking to expel Kiyotaka. He failed to recognise how much influence he truly holds and was vehemently told Horikita that he will give his criticism vote to her under the rationale that she was disrupting their class tranquillity when she unceasingly questioned Yamauchi. Even though Yamauchi was considered the least valuable member of their class and was a traitor, he unpretentiously told the class to cast their criticism vote on him instead which would lead to expulsion despite knowing that the class views him with greater importance. He has went against his class more than once and openly showed his dissatisfaction and anger to his classmates after he couldn’t handle all the anxiety bottled up in himself. On one occasion, Kiyotaka straightforwardly and unabashedly repeated his failures and told him to stop trying to find excuses to run away. This caused him to break down and realise his mistakes while also jokingly refer to Kiyotaka for being mean.

In the light novels, it is revealed that his personality stems from the guilt of abandoning his childhood friend who suffered from severe bullying without Yōsuke being there. Through this experience, he has tried to solve things using an alternative way rather than fighting even if it's not the best solution. He also knows when to draw the line when helping others such as Kei and will evade confrontation whenever violence seems unavoidable. Yōsuke is also shown to be incredibly perceptive, as he slowly deduced that Kiyotaka was the one orchestrating their class successes and not Suzune Horikita. He has also shown no interest in women and on the topic of romance as a whole. He told Kiyotaka that he genuinely believes that this would continue being the case even as he progress through life.

Background

Yōsuke was an average guy who didn't stand out much until his second year of middle school, contrary to the man he is now who always showed excellence in leadership.

Though he didn't stand out too much, he admitted that he wasn't invisible. He was normal. His friend, Sugimura, was also like that, who he got along with really well ever since he was a kid. For the entire six years in elementary school, they were together in the same class because they were neighbors as well, they always went to and back from school together.

However, after they entered middle school, for the first time, they were separated into different classes. Though that was the case, Yōsuke and Sugimura still went to school and back home together. However, the days they were together started declining very gradually and diminished completely. Yōsuke began hanging out with friends from his new class. In a new environment, it's inevitable to make new friends, anyway. Little did he knew that while Yōsuke was busy playing with his friends, behind his back, Sugimura was being bullied.

Sugimura sent Yōsuke pleas for help many times. Sugimura would often show up with his face injured and injury marks all over him. But against those wailing calls, Yōsuke instead chose to become silent, deaf, and blind. He prioritized playing with his new friends and never took Sugimura seriously. The latter on the other hand, who originally had a headstrong personality, become someone who was always quick to pick a fight so the former never deeply thought about his situation. A year later, Yōsuke and Sugimura both became sophomore students and they reunited with each other. However, Sugimura had become heartbroken at that time. His previously bright, cheerful image was no longer there and marks left by punches and kicks only remained. He was not even allowed to go to the toilet and was forced to leak in the middle of class. That sort of bullying became a routine.

Though Yōsuke witnessed such violence, he didn't do anything, and much more, he couldn't do anything. Yōsuke was too afraid that he would become the new target, that his "enjoyable life" would then be destroyed. Towards Sugimura who'd always been with him, he continued to pretend to not see him. He believed that one of these three best outcomes would happen: Either one day the bullies would just get bored of him, or Sugimura would stop coming to school and the bullying would stop, or somebody else would step in and save him. Yōsuke claimed that he just kept on thinking self-serving things like that.

In the end, what the memory of what happened to Sugimura is burned into Yōsuke's mind. After the latter's morning soccer practice, he returned to his classroom. And there, he saw Sugimura. Though they were previously close to one another, Yōsuke hesitated before going in since, at the time, he felt uncomfortable. Even though he was a friend he played together with ever since they were children, at the time he almost felt like a stranger to him. Yōsuke could not help but think cruel thoughts like he would be bullied along with him if he associated himself back with Sugimura. After a few moments, both of them weren't saying anything. Nothing could be heard and felt but a deafening silence and eerily cold atmosphere. That day, in the middle of class — where only these pair of precious friends were present, Sugimura jumped out the window.

After being sent to the hospital, Sugimura was declared brain dead and even now, Sugimura's parents are still waiting for his recovery and believe in it. But whether he's still alive or dead now, Yōsuke doesn't know what to think about it. He believed that the events of that day were still so surreal as he still wonders if it was merely a dream or a hallucination. He claimed that the moment Sugimura jumped, he became acutely aware — that by treasuring only himself, Yōsuke pushed his precious friend, Sugimura, to his death.

This is how Yōsuke attained his messiah complex. Though he thinks that this will not result in Sugimura's salvation, but, at the very least, he wants to repent by saving someone else like him — someone who experienced bullying to the extremes.[1]

Plot

Episode 001-034

Yōsuke introduces himself to the class.

In the anime's debut, Yōsuke, like the other first years, listened in to the speech given by Manabu Horikita, the Student Council President welcoming them to the Advanced Nurturing High School. While waiting for their teacher to begin the class that day, he asked everyone in Class D to introduce themselves, starting off by giving his name and stating how he played every sport imaginable and wanting to apply for the soccer club, while also hoping to get along with everyone else.

Other people followed his lead, introducing themselves in turn until Ken Sudō cut in, remarking how childish it was before their teacher Sae Chabashira walked in and started class.[2] Of course like the rest of his class. He was surprised by their initial 100,000 points, but was of course confused as to why they didn't receive any next month, prompting Sae to give out a further explanation of the points system and why Class D is seen as being as it is.

At the start of Episode 2 of the anime, Yōsuke was seen hanging with his class at the pool, getting especially close with Kei Karuizawa.

Episode 007-011

Yōsuke and Kei meet Suzune over summer break.

For most episodes after that, he is often seen in the background or associating with Kei as shown they were seen together talking to Suzune Horikita outside the dormitories before Kei dragged him away.

Episode 008-071

Yōsuke meets Kiyotaka on the cruise.

During the school cruise, Yōsuke formally met Kiyotaka Ayanokōji on the cruise and attempted to make conversation before revealing needed his help in getting Suzune to be more involved with the class socially and academically.

Episode 009 - 026

Yōsuke in the survival test.

Onshore along with the rest of the class, the purpose of the cruise was revealed; to hold a one-week survival test with a chance to gain points for overtaking higher classes. Setting out on a Deserted Island, Yōsuke together with his classmates discussed how to use their S-Points sparingly to gain more class points at the end of the exam.

After the camp was set up and Kei's underwear is stolen, Yōsuke searched the boys for them and when searching Kiyotaka, he found the underwear on him (after Ike had given them to him). Not wanting any further problems, he covered for him, much to the latter's surprise. In the evening, Kiyotaka questioned his motives for not revealing the truth, with Yōsuke asking if he was the one who stole them, but as Kiyotaka denied it, Yōsuke believed him, disclosing he didn't think he was the type of guy to do that sort of thing.

The next day, the girls wanted the boys separated from them. Though Yōsuke at first attempted to dissuade them, he eventually agreed to the decision. Since he is well known for being kind and trusting, the girls put him on guard duty for the separation, but Suzune stepped in stating that since Yōsuke is a boy he needed to be watched as well. The girls acknowledged her point but had no idea who to pick as most of the boys were lecherous. Suzune nominated Kiyotaka as another guard for work and watch Yōsuke. This decision was accepted by Yōsuke and the girls.[3]

When the camp faced a problem after the survival book is burned, Yōsuke is left in despair as he broke down, unable to process why misfortune was befalling the camp. He was snapped out of it by Kiyotaka, who further motivated him to take charge and get the camp under control.[4]

At the end of the test, Kiyotaka informed Yōsuke of everything that had happened the night before, including how Suzune was too ill to continue the survival test, and at one point handed him the other class leaders name to get the class a whole lot of points. When Yōsuke asked about how he got the names, Kiyotaka passed the credit onto Suzune. The whole class was relieved that they won the test and celebrated Suzune's accomplishments, unbeknownst to them that Kiyotaka was the true mastermind. [5]

Three days since the end of the Special Exam on the island, Yōsuke invited Kiyotaka to had lunch with him on the deck. He thanked him for his help finding the culprit who stole Kei's underwear. As they looked down at the menu, Yōsuke began revealing his motive for inviting Kiyotaka there. He explained that he wanted Kiyotaka to be a bridge to help him reach Suzune as it was necessary to make Class D come together and work hard in the future. He then admitted that he didn't have the confidence to speak with Suzune and this proposal was his last resort. However, Kiyotaka refused his idea, believing that if Yōsuke really wanted to join forces with Suzune, he'd have to face her directly. Yōsuke immediately realized his error in judgment and apologized to Kiyotaka.

That afternoon, another special test was announced on the cruise ship. After receiving a briefing from the teacher, Kiyotaka returned to his room, where he met Yōsuke, who seemed to get ready to leave. Yōsuke asked Kiyotaka to come with him since the school's message should be coming pretty soon. As they were walking in the hallway, Yōsuke proceeded to tell Kiyotaka that Yukimura had come to talk to him about the exam and wondering if he noticed anything. He expressed his doubt regarding the reason why the school split the students up for just merely explanations. As they finally arrived at Yōsuke's meeting place on the second deck, several guys and girls were gathered near the door. Apparently, in this Cruise Ship Special Test, Yōsuke was placed in the Dragon Group, along with Suzune and Kushida from his class. The group also included prominent students from other classes, like Kōhei Katsuragi from Class 1-A, Ryūji Kanzaki from Class 1-B, and Kakeru Ryūen from Class 1-C. Kiyotaka noticed that this lineup was full with the representative of all classes and asked Yōsuke if he would be okay, to which Yōsuke answered that he would do his best no matter who was in his group. Kiyotaka then wished Yōsuke luck as he left the place, realizing that Yōsuke had his work cut out from that moment.[6]

After the second discussion period ended for the night, Yōsuke was seen waiting for Kiyotaka in their room as he wanted to chat with him regarding their current exam alongside Yukimura. He then explained that two of their classmates had been assigned as the VIPs in their groups, but he refused to reveal who they were when Yukimura asked him. However, he eventually changed his mind after Kiyotaka suggested showing VIPs' identity through his phone just in case someone was listening to their conversation. As he showed their names, he noticed Kiyotaka was worried after seeing Kushida's name as VIP in the Dragon group so he assured that everything was all right. Yukimura thought there could be another VIP student from Class D in the Rabbit group, with Yōsuke agreed and assumed they might have consulted someone else instead of him. Meanwhile, Kōenji started humming from across the room, making Yukimura lost his patience and start arguing with him. Kōenji expressed his boredom towards this exam before took out his phone and fiddled with it. Suddenly, the others' phones rang as they received a mail from the school which was Monkey's test has ended, much to their surprise. Soon, Yōsuke's phone was flooded with messages from the students who were surprised by the news.

The following day, at 2 AM in the morning, Kiyotaka noticed Yōsuke had slipped out of bed as he was taking extreme consideration not to wake the other three people in the room. When Yōsuke realized that Kiyotaka was awake, they exchanged glances without speaking a word. Without looking away, Kiyotaka told Yōsuke there was something he needed to talk to him about, to which Yōsuke replied that he would be waiting in the hall. As they met in the hallway, Yōsuke asked with a troubled look if he woke Kiyotaka up. Kiyotaka responded that he thought Yōsuke would leave during the night, as Kei had contacted him. Yōsuke asked if he knew something, and Kiyotaka simply said he was in the same group with Kei, so he understood the situation. Kiyotaka also mentioned that Suzune asked him to report on anything that happened in the Rabbit group and keep an eye on Yōsuke. When Kiyotaka expressed his request for Yōsuke to tell him everything about Kei, Yōsuke didn't know what to tell him because he had to consider her feelings. He warned Kiyotaka that the information he was about to tell him was extremely sensitive and that Kei might refuse to talk.

Kei was already there waiting for Yōsuke when they arrived at the meeting place in front of the vending machine. Kei was surprised and angered that Kiyotaka was there, but Yōsuke tells her that he brought him along since he seemed to understand the situation. Yōsuke then talked about Kei's encounter with the Class C girls, with Kiyotaka confirming that he also saw it. Kei asked Yōsuke to take revenge on the girls, but Yōsuke refused and wanted to resolve things with them peacefully. When she insisted that it wasn't possible, Yōsuke didn't budge, saying he couldn't just hurt someone else to help her. It didn't matter what the reason was, he couldn't do what she wanted. However, since she was one of his classmates, he promised to help her if she was in trouble.

Kei shouted that he was a liar since he said he would protect her, but Yōsuke stood up and said that Kei had known his stance since the beginning, that they were not actually boyfriend and girlfriend and he wouldn't fight a war for her. Kei was horrified by what Yōsuke had just said and asked why he was suddenly saying this. Yōsuke approached Kei, who looked upset, but didn't try to touch her shoulder. He told her that he intended to speak with Manabe and her friends in the morning and tell them that Kei would apologize. Kei still refused, to which Yōsuke responded that he couldn't help her if that were the case. Yōsuke then asked Kiyotaka for ideas, but Kei angrily declared that she didn't need help while throwing the can of juice she was holding down the hall. She shouted that their relationship was over before she abandoned them and left. Yōsuke was annoyed that he couldn't help her; however, he showed no signs of running after her. Yōsuke told Kiyotaka that he had his own limits and he couldn't do anything. That's why he wanted him to understand.

Kiyotaka mentioned that Yōsuke was everyone's ally, not just a bridge to connect people. Yōsuke said that his priority might change depending on the situation, and Kiyotaka was far more capable than everyone thought. Kiyotaka asked about Yōsuke's fake relationship with Kei, pointing out that even though they had been dating for almost four months, their relationship hadn't progressed much. Kiyotaka also noted that Kei's popularity had soared after going out with Yōsuke, and he was playing the boyfriend role to help raise her status. However, in response, Yōsuke simply smiled and hadn't admitted Kiyotaka was right. Kiyotaka thought that there was still more to it, as Yōsuke had easily accepted her request. In the end, he concluded that she wanted to protect herself, to which Yōsuke confirmed.

Yōsuke said that he got goosebumps when Kiyotaka found the answer. When Kiyotaka tried to pass the credit to Suzune, Yōsuke didn't fall for his deception. He told him that his words and presence now were totally different from before, that Kiyotaka had shown him a clear, well-reasoned logic which was not something he could pretend to have. Kiyotaka was a bit surprised and thought that Yōsuke was smarter than he had imagined. Yōsuke then revealed that Kei was viciously bullied in elementary and junior high years. Though he only met her after she started school, he understood that people who were bullied give off a unique vibe; that's why he agreed to go out with her. That way, she could free herself from her past by using her position as his girlfriend.

Kiyotaka asked for his reason to accept her request, to which he simply replied that it was enough for him if Kei wasn't bullied. However, Kiyotaka wasn't convinced as he was sure there some deeper reason as well, thinking that Yōsuke's concern for others was downright pathological.

Yōsuke then told Kiyotaka about his past, where he was still a nobody that didn't stand out much. He had a childhood friend named Sugimura, who was also his neighbor and classmate throughout his elementary years. After they entered middle school, for the first time, they were separated into different classes. Though that was the case, Yōsuke and Sugimura still went to school and back home together. However, the days they were together started declining very gradually and diminished completely. Yōsuke began hanging out with friends from his new class. Little did he know that while Yōsuke was busy playing with his friends, Sugimura was being bullied behind his back. A year later, Yōsuke and Sugimura both became sophomore students, and they reunited with each other. However, Sugimura had become heartbroken at that time. His previously bright, cheerful image was no longer there, and marks left by punches and kicks only remained.

Though Yōsuke witnessed such violence, he couldn't do anything. Yōsuke was too afraid that he would become the new target, that his "enjoyable life" would then be destroyed. Towards Sugimura, who'd always been with him, Yōsuke continued to pretend not to see him. He believed that one of these three best outcomes would happen: Either one day the bullies would just get bored of him, or Sugimura would stop coming to school and the bullying would stop, or somebody else would step in and save him. Yōsuke claimed that he just kept on thinking self-serving things like that.

In the end, the memory of what happened to Sugimura is burned into Yōsuke's mind. After the latter's morning soccer practice, he returned to his classroom. And there, he saw Sugimura. Though they were previously close to one another, Yōsuke hesitated before going in since, at the time, he felt uncomfortable. Yōsuke could not help but think cruel thoughts like he would be bullied along with him if he associated himself with Sugimura. After a few moments, both of them weren't saying anything. That day, in the middle of class, Sugimura jumped out the window.

After being sent to the hospital, Sugimura was declared brain dead and even now, Sugimura's parents are still waiting for his recovery and believe in it. Yōsuke realized that his selfishness had helped driving a close friend to his death. That's why he wanted to atone by saving others. He was aware that he was not a hero anything, but at least he wanted to save the people close to him. That was his penance for the sin he committed.

Kiyotaka said Yōsuke couldn't save both Kei and Manabe. Yōsuke understood that and said it was probably why Kiyotaka was also there with him at the moment. Kiyotaka then asked Yōsuke for a favor and handed him a piece of paper. Yōsuke accepted his request before telling Kiyotaka that he knew the last VIP student's identity from Class D.

The next day, Kiyotaka decided to make a move. He headed down to the lowest level on the ship, where generally no one appeared, and phones had almost no reception. After observing, Kiyotaka then returned to the upper deck and had Yōsuke call Kei in an hour. Following their conversation last night, Kiyotaka thought Yōsuke might be especially on his guard. But Kiyotaka knew if Yōsuke called Kei and said he wanted to speak with her alone, she'd respond. Even though she had said she was breaking up with Yōsuke, she'd be the one to suffer if that happened. Kiyotaka then received a message from Yōsuke, saying he had promised to meet Kei at 4:00 PM and sent Kiyotaka information about Manabe, which saved Kiyotaka an extraordinary amount of trouble because he wouldn't have to risk asking Kushida. Shortly after that, Yōsuke sent him another message, stating that he didn't want to make Kei sad. Kiyotaka read the message and thought to himself that Yōsuke would've been furious if he knew what Kiyotaka was about to do. However, even if Kei were to break there, Kiyotaka would be fine so long as Yōsuke didn't find out.

After the final discussion period ended, Yōsuke met with Kiyotaka, Kei, and Suzune at the cafe. They talked about the four emails being sent earlier that announced the ending of the test for Rat, Horse, Rooster, and Pig groups which all had traitors. Suzune wondered if one of the Class D students had sent an email in other groups, Yōsuke refuted it and said that he had gone around to ask people in the individual group earlier, but none of the guys said they turned traitor. Yōsuke expressed his doubt regarding why only a small group of people were given explanations for the exam. After noticing that the school responded without a delay when Kouenji sent the email to betray his group, which means it must have been automated, Yōsuke concluded that all the betrayal emails came from one class and that they might have sent the emails at the exact same time as a way of showing off their supremacy. Soon after, their group was joined by Ryūen. When Ryūen told them that he knew the Dragon group's VIP identity, which was Kushida, Yōsuke was stunned because he thought he had carefully protected Kushida. He then asked Ryūen how he figured it out, to which Ryūen simply answered it involved Suzune.
